Unsealed roads.. a new key learning

Writer's picture: Ed HughesEd Hughes

After a beach day it was time to head to Two Wheels Riga. A hotel for bikers, with garage facilities and other bits and pieces. I'll be staying here will I sort out some paperwork, creating a USA mailing address, US / Canada insurance, import documents etc..

On the way here I thought I would take a more interesting route (sat-nav has a "thrill ride" setting). Which resulted in my first ride on unsealed roads (13km only).

Road bike, road tyres on compacted dirt, gravel and sand - something I will need to get used to if I ride past Irkutsk. Anyway - video on the way. The key seems to be to keep relaxed, don't worry about the front and rear tyres squirming from side to side and to trust in the gyroscopic forces to keep you upright. (One for the physicists - but the faster you go, the more the wheels act like gyroscopes to always cause the bike to stand upright. Great for stability, bobbins for cornering, which means to turn the bike at speed you have to turn the handlebar opposite to the way you want to go.)

Ok - off to work on windows video editing.
